Day 4: Savannah!
Thursday morning after eating breakfast at the hotel, we
loaded up and headed back into Charleston to play around at Battery Park. As you will see from the pictures, the kids
LOVED playing on the cannons and cannonballs that were representative of the
Revolutionary, 1812 and Civil was having been fought there. It was fun checking out the statues, the
ocean, the Palmetto horses and chasing squirrels around the park! Sadie, as usual, was our little daredevil,
ending up on the tops of cannons when we turned our backs for even a
second! And if Sadie could do it….Silas wanted
a try as well! We spent most of the
morning climbing one canon after another!
Then we headed to our favorite store, Trader Joe’s! However, on the way, our GPS took us down a
random back street and Heidi spotted a tiny replica of one of the historic
houses. On it was the sign, “Little Free
Library”. We put on the breaks and
grabbed a book, meeting a nice southern lady who was making a donation to the
library on her walk home! After asking
for a quick review, she responded by saying it was “not mind boggling” so we
went for a Christmas novel instead!
We ate our leftovers in the Trader Joe’s parking lot, then
entered the store to play “Spot TJ the Turtle”, grabbing some food and handing
out our first of many Dum-Dum suckers on our trip to the manager of the store
who spent time teaching the kids a little lesson.
Then we headed to Savannah, almost running out of gas along
the way, and enjoyed a day of sightseeing!
We saw trolleys powered by the passengers pedaling, a church where John
Wesley was rector during his time in Georgia, and a famous Praline candy
store. Our favorite experience was
riding across the river on a tugboat.
You will have to use your imagination, as we left our camera in the
car. But the kids LOVED it!
At the City Market we met a wonderful lady who told us we
looked miserable and made us stand behind her booth in front of her fans. She was awarded a Dum-Dum for her
troubles. We have suckers with a Bible
verse attached and the kids are having a wonderful time handing them out to the
people we encounter along our trip. Our
favorite hand out occurred as we were walking back, soaking wet from the
fountain. A nice elderly couple holding
hands through the park looked at Sadie and said she looked “just like Cinderella”! This of course made her day and Sadie and
Heidi ended up talking to them for quite a while, while Silas ran back to J.L.
for the sucker stash! We handed them
each a sucker and the sweet southern belle pulled out her iPhone to take a
picture with Silas, Sadie and “Mama”, proceeding to email it to me! The picture is attached below. All in all we had a wonderful day and can’t
wait to head to Disney in the morning!!
