Buckets!

Day 3: Charleston!

Today was an awesome adventure! By 8 am we were on our way to Charleston, S.C. after having said good-bye to the Miller family and having breakfast with friends!  It was wonderful seeing Matt, Krista, and Claire at their house in High Point.  Matt was responsible for hiring J.L. and bringing us to Houghton three years ago.  He started out as a boss and now we count them as some truly wonderful friends!  Thanks for hosting us for breakfast so early in the morning! We wish we could have stayed longer!

After another puking incident and what we think to be a car robbery in progress (14 Sheriff’s speeding down the shoulder next to us to an abandoned car with all airbags deployed) we made it to beautiful Charleston, S.C.!  We hit up the Old City Market and saw some basket weaving and Palmetto horse drawn carriages before thinking our skin might start to melt off our bodies. So we headed to Waterfront Park and cooled off in the fountains!  We had a BLAST! By the time we left we were more than a little soaked and feeling pretty refreshed!  We grabbed a free sample of Italian Ice and headed back to the car to grab some dinner.  We figured after eating just what we packed up to this point we should actually head to a restaurant for a nice sit down dinner. On the way we crossed over the famous Ravenel Bridge while singing “Happy Birthday” to great-Nanny on her 90th birthday!  Then we stopped off at Brixx Wood Fired for kids eat free and vegan cheese pizza.  We scored 3 free kids meals and have enough leftovers for tomorrow!  AND…the balloon girl made Silas a helicopter and Sadie a Little Mermaid balloon, exciting them to no end!
Before heading to the hotel we traveled to John’s Island and saw the most incredible oak tree; Angel Oak!  It is estimated to be in excess of 1400 years old, stands 66.5 feet tall, measures 28 feet in circumference, and produces shade that covers 17,200 square feet. From tip to tip Its longest branch distance is 187 feet.  We could have stared at it all day! (All but Sadie who was exhausted from the day and fell sound asleep on the car ride out!)
Then we checked in to our first hotel, compliments of Christina Bancroft!  We got on jammies, snuggled in bed and ate leftover birthday cake from Silas’ party before snuggling in for the night!  Tomorrow: Savannah!
